Captains Baseball on the Road Tuesday at Mary Washington

CNU will face Eagles at 3:00 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University Captains (1-0) will head out of town for game two of the 2011 baseball season, as CNU travels to Mary Washington (2-0) for a 3:00 pm game on Tuesday. The Eagles are receiving votes in the preseason D3Baseball.com national rankings and swept Messiah in their opener on Saturday.

Christopher Newport opened with a 13-0 blanking of Hampden-Sydney, as junior pitcher Sean Chitsaz (Burke, Va.) pitched five scoreless and combined with three others for the shutout. Matt Shoemaker hit a grand slam and scored three runs to lead the offense for CNU, while Ben Lenda went 3-5 in the game.

UMW was led by rookie Beattie Southerland in the season-opening doubleheader on Saturday, as the freshman had five hits in his debut. The Eagles dropped Messiah 7-3, followed by a 2-0 one-hitter in the nightcap.

The two teams have played just 11 times, with CNU holding a 7-4 advantage. The Captains last won in 2009, dropping Mary Washington by a final of 13-3.
