DANVILLE, Va. -- Christopher Newport University heads out on the road for the last time in the 2011 regular season this weekend, as the eighth-ranked women's team and head coach
John Krikorian's men's team takes on Averett University and Ferrum College in USA South action. On Saturday, February 12, both teams will face Averett at 2 and 4:00 pm, followed by a doubleheader with all kinds of playoff implications on Sunday, February 13 at 2 and 4:00 pm.
On the women's side, the #8 Captains (19-2, 13-1) are led by senior
Chelsie Schweers, the nation's leading scorer at 25.9 points per game. Schweers is just one three-pointer away from taking over sole possession of second place all-time in made trey's in her career at the NCAA Division III level.
The Captains defeated Averett and Ferrum at the Freeman Center earlier this year, as CNU put a season-high 99 points on the board against Ferrum, and doubled up Averett, 78-36. Ferrum (14-7, 10-4) is led by Kristen Keith, averaging 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while Tesla Akers adds 12.9 points for the Panthers. Averett (12-10, 7-8) is getting a double-double a night from Ashley Washington, with 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
CNU is currently in third place on the men's side, trailing only N.C. Wesleyan and Ferrum tied for first at 8-1 in league play. The Captains will face Averett at 4:00 pm on Saturday before the big matchup against Ferrum on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
The Captains are led by
Conley Taylor and
Tra Benefield, as Taylor ranks in the nation's top ten in scoring averaging 23.3 points per game and the rookie sensation Benefield is averaging 15.5 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game.
Averett (2-20, 0-9) is getting 15.3 points per game from Kenny Hart, but struggled against the Captains in the Freeman Center. The Captains held the Cougars to just 22% shooting as not one Averett player reached double figures for the only time this season. Nineteenth-ranked Ferrum (19-3, 8-1) is led by USA South Player of the Year candidate Derek Mitchell, averaging a double-double with 19.1 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. The Captains snuck past Ferrum in Newport News, dropping the Panthers 80-67, going 12-12 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes to ice the game late.
