LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore
Tia Perry scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Christopher Newport Captains (6-3) to a 58-40 win at Lynchburg College (1-7) today, ending a three-game skid. Perry filled the stat sheet, knocking down 9-of-14 shots, grabbing seven rebounds with four assists, two blocks and three steals.
The Captains defense was impressive in the first half, outscoring Lynchburg 36-17 in the first stanza. CNU forced 17 turnovers in the half, holding the Hornets to just 19 first-half shots.
Perry scored 12 of her 23 points in the first half, adding three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Nicole Mitchell added nine points and six rebounds to help CNU to the big lead. The Captains shot 45.2% from the floor as a team.
In the second half, neither team could get much going offensively, as the two teams combined for just 45 second half points. Lynchburg shot 33.3% in the half (9-27) and CNU managed to hit 30.3% (10-33). The CNU defense continued to press, forcing 10 turnovers in the second half.
For the game, Lynchburg had 27 giveaways, including 13 CNU steals. The Captains also added six blocks in the game in one of the best defensive efforts of the year.
Mitchell scored 11 points with eight rebounds, while also dishing six assists for the Captains. She added two blocks and two steals. Senior forward
Lauren Gural had five steals in the win, adding four points.
Lynchburg got double figures from Roslyn Alexander, with 12 points, and Carly Greenlief, with 11. Greenlief also had eight rebounds, while reserve Caleigh Patterson grabbed a game-high nine boards with three steals.
The Captains will stay on the road for their next action, with a conference game against N.C. Wesleyan. The 5:30 pm tilt is set for January 4.
