CNU Field Hockey Falls to Ursinus in NCAA Opening Round

Captains wrap up 2011 season with 12-6 overall record

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Captains took an early lead on the 11th-ranked Ursinus Bears (17-3), but the home team scored three unanswered to drop Christopher Newport in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. 

CNU wraps up the season with a 12-6 overall record after making a sixth straight trip to the postseason. Christopher Newport senior Kelsey Rigby scored just 3:56 into the match to give the Captains a 1-0 lead on the road.

Ursinus got the equalizer in the 14th minute of action when Rachel Pandl scored the first of two goals in the match off an assist by Corinne Freeman. The two teams each had chances but were tied for the remainder of the first half.

In the second-half the home team outshot CNU, 14-7, but CNU still managed five shots on-frame. Jill Lukens made eight saves in the game and Katie McEwen had one defensive save to hold the Captains to just one goal. CNU keeper Jaime Dowling also made eight saves in the cage for CNU.

Pandl scored the eventual gamewinner in the 51st minute and Alyssa Thren added her 20th goal of the season from the right side of the cage in the 66th minute for the insurance tally.

Lauren Cheatham led the way for CNU with five shots, all on-goal, while junior Caitlin Cahill also had five shots for the Captains.
