CNU Women's Basketball Hosts Home Opener Today at 3pm

Captains take on Virginia Wesleyan College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team will host its home opener today, as they entertain Virginia Wesleyan College (2-0) at 3:00 pm. CNU has started the season with an unblemished 3-0 record, winning by double digits in each of its first three contests.

Saturday's afternoon tilt will be the first time CNU has played at home since last year's NCAA Tournament when they dropped Johns Hopkins in the Second Round and advanced to the Sweet 16. CNU will play three of the next four in the Freeman Center, including the USA South opener on Wednesday, November 30 at 7:00 pm.

The Captains have been led by sophomore forward Nicole Mitchell so far this season, with 15.7 points per game, shooting 70% from the field through the first three games. Classmate Tia Perry has added 10.3 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game, while senior Jerlisa Bowser is also in double figures at 11.0 points per game.

Virginia Wesleyan is also undefeated early this season, winning its first two games to start the year. Center Kristen Blalock is averaging 20.0 points per game while Sarah Seipp has added 14.5 points per game.

The Captains own a 37-21 advantage in the all-time series, dating back to the 1971-72 season. CNU has won four straight home openers and is 20-17 overall in the first home game of the year. Live stats will be available at tip-off.
