Captains Host Wesley, Washington & Lee in CNU Invitational This Weekend

CNU hosts three-game tournament at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University men's basketball team (2-2) will host Wesley University (1-1) and Washington & Lee University (3-1) in the CNU Invitational this weekend. The Captains will play the Wolverines on Friday night at 7:30, followed by the neutral site contest between Wesley and W&L on Saturday at 5:00 and the CNU game vs the Generals on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

The Captains are 2-2 to start the season, with a pair of tight setbacks against Randolph-Macon and Mary Washington. CNU lost by two the the Yellow Jackets to open the season and then by four to the Eagles earlier this week. CNU also beat Mary Washington in their home opener, by two, and also surged past York (N.Y.) by nine in the opening weekend.

The Captains have been led by senior guard Conley Taylor, with 20.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He also leads the team in steals with eight and is second in assists with eight. Sophomore Tra Benefield is adding 16.8 points per game while junior Luc Atangana is second on the team in rebounding with 6.0 rpg.

Coming into the weekend's tournament, Wesley is just 1-1 on the season, suffering a two-point setback at Lebanon Valley last time out. Paul Reynolds is averaging a double-double through two games to lead the way, with 19.5 points and 10 rebounds per contest. J.J. Bryan (13.5) and David Langan (10.5) are also in double figures for the Wolverines.

Washington & Lee has won three of its first four games, all on the road. The Generals have also been led by a player averaging a double-double, in J.D. Ey with 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Larry Whitaker is just shy, with 12.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for the Generals, while Jeremy Adkins is adding 11.2 points per contest.
