Captains Drop Roanoke at R-MC Tip-Off Classic, 72-58

CNU improves to 2-0 on opening weekend

ASHLAND, Va. -- Three players finished in double figures for the Captains (2-0) as they dropped Roanoke College (0-3) at the R-MC Tip-Off Classic today, 72-58. Sophomore Nicole Mitchell finished with a game-high 14 points and five rebounds to lead the way for CNU.

CNU raced out to an 8-0 lead as sophomores Tia Perry and Mitchell combined for the early run. The Captains opened the game on a 15-5 run to open up a 10-point lead just over seven minutes into the game. The lead built to as many as 16 in the first half, when Mitchell knocked down a jumper with 1:50 remaining to make it 36-20.

Senior Jerlisa Bowser led the way in the first 20 minutes, knocking down 4-of-6 shots including a three for nine points. CNU shot 45.7% as a team, on 16-of-35 shooting. Defensively, CNU had three steals and two blocks while controlling the ball incredibly well with just one turnover.

In the second half, the Captains continued their hot shooting, dropping 48.6% of their shots after halftime. The Captains extended their lead to as many as 28 in the second half, going up 64-36 on an Andrea Hobbs layup with less than seven minutes remaining.

Roanoke finished the game on a run to close the final score to just 14 points, but the Captains had the game in hand throughout and won by double digits for the second consecutive night.

CNU played 14 players in the blowout victory and all but one got into the scoring column. Mitchell's 14 led all players, as Perry and Bowser each finished with 11. Perry filled the stat sheet with five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Rookie Camry Green hauled in five rebounds paired with eight points.

The Maroons were led by Laurel Hankins and Kayla Lemke with 10 points each and Paxton Gwin grabbed a game-high six rebounds.

CNU shot 47.1% (33-70) from the field and outrebounded Roanoke 37-30 including a 12-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Captains return to action on Tuesday, November 22 as they stay on the road for a tilt against Salisbury University. Tip is set for 6:00 pm.
