Women's Hoops Cruises to Season Opening Win at Randolph-Macon, 74-48

Nicole Mitchell leads the way with career-high 19 points

ASHLAND, Va. -- The 2011-12 season opened on a high note for the Christopher Newport University Captains on Friday evening, as CNU scored 45 points in the first half and blew past Randolph-Macon (1-1), 74-48. The season-opening win saw the Captains shoot over 52% from the field, led by sophomore forward Nicole Mitchell with a career-high 19 points.

Randolph-Macon led by four, 12-8, after just over four minutes of action, but the Captains turned up the heat both offensively and defensively for the rest of the half. CNU dominated the action with a 37-12 run the rest of the half to take a 45-24 lead at the break. The Captains also forced six turnovers during the run, holding the Yellow Jackets to just one made field goal in over 10 minutes of action.

Mitchell had 15 first half points to break her previous career high for a game in just one half.

The Captains added to their big lead in the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 29-24 after the break. Fifteen different CNU players saw action in the first game of the season with 11 getting into the scorebook.

Mitchell led the way offensively, scoring her career-best 19 points on an impressive 9-of-11 shooting while adding a team-high six rebounds. Two more Captains were in double figures as sophomores Andrea Hobbs and Tia Perry finished with 14 and 10 respectively. Rookie Camry Green added six points and six boards off the bench for CNU.

Randolph-Macon was led by Maggie Roy with 15 points and Taylor Wieczorek with 10, while Jillian Asay had a team-high six rebounds.

The Captains will return to the R-MC Tip-Off Classic on Saturday as they play Roanoke College in a neutral site battle. Tip is set for 2:00 pm.
