ASHLAND, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team will open the 2011-12 season on Friday, as the Captains take on Randolph-Macon in the R-MC Tip-Off Classic at 6:00 pm. CNU takes the floor for the first time since the program's first ever Final Four appearance last March, returning a pair of starters from that squad.
Randolph-Macon owns a slight 9-6 advantage in the all-time series. The Captains won the last matchup, taking a 78-67 victory in 2009-10 at home.
Christopher Newport will feature a new look in 2011-12, after suffering the loss of three seniors including National Player of the Year
Chelsie Schweers. The Captains return a pair of senior starters,
Kimmy Hopkins and
Lauren Gural and a third fourth-year player
Jerlisa Bowser to lead the young squad this season.
Randolph-Macon is 1-0 after a season-opening win over Marymount on Tuesday. Senior Taylor Wieczorek led the way with 17 points in the game, while also grabbing a team-high five rebounds.
