NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Freeman Center will play host to the NCAA Newport News Regional Championship game today, at 3:00 p.m. The sixth-ranked CNU women's volleyball team (35-4) will play host to the third-ranked Emory Eagles (36-4) in a showdown between national championship hopefuls.
Last season, the two met in the Elite Eight, when CNU took a 1-0 lead, but ultimately falling in five sets to the Eagles. After ten all-time meetings in the series, Christopher Newport is still looking for its first win over the perennial power.
The Captains are led by junior middle
Bailey Jensen. Jensen leads the team in kills per set (2.54) and has also posted the second-best season in blocks in school history, with 125 total. Jensen is hitting .545 in the NCAA Tournament with 20 kills in two matches. Meanwhile, senior
Jessie Heavenrich has been solid in the middle of the floor, with 62 assists and 21 digs.
As a team, the Captains have posted their third straight 35-win season after a 3-0 sweep of Salisbury University yesterday.
Emory hit .320 as a team in the NCAA Second Round matchup against Randolph-Macon, sweeping the Yellow Jackets, 3-0. The win gave the Eagles a 36-4 overall record, tying the school record for most wins in a season. Fifth year senior Amelia McCall, the 2010 National Player of the Year, had a huge 19-kill performance on Saturday, hitting .395 for the Eagles.
Breanah Bourque has also been a powerful hitter for Emory this season, averaging 3.34 kills per set with a team-best .434 hitting percentage. She has 394 total kills and just 75 errors this season. Natalie Schonefeld is among the nation's elite setters, with over 1300 assists this season.
First serve for the Captains and Eagles Regional Championship Match is set for 3:00 p.m. The winner will advance to St. Louis, Missouri for the NCAA Championships next weekend.
