NEWPORT NEWS, Va – The second day of the 2011 NCAA Newport News Volleyball Regional finished with a Christopher Newport University sweep of Salisbury University in 3 sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21. The Captains advance to the NCAA Regional Final against the top-seed, and #3 ranked Emory University. Game time tomorrow is set for 3:00pm EST.
CNU and Salisbury both struggled in the first set to find rhythm in their attack as both teams combined for 15 attack errors. The difference in the first set proved to be
Bailey Jensen. The Junior from Ashburn, VA led the Captains with six blocks in the set to spark her team mates as they worked themselves into the flow of the game.
The Captains secured a lopsided second set as Salisbury's attack faltered with 11 errors and allowed CNU to race out to a double-digit lead. Both teams put together a more efficient attack in the third set as CNU hit .325 while Salisbury crawled into positive numbers for the first time in the match, hitting .163. On the match, the Sea Gulls hit only .009 as CNU stymied them at the net.
Jensen led the way for CNU with 11 kills including a .647 hitting average. Jensen also added 8 blocks. Heavenrich posted her second consecutive tournament double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs.
Salisbury's Kelly Vieira led the Seas Gulls with five kills while Michelle Meehan turned in a strong performance with a match-high 17 digs.
Sunday's Regional Championship against Emory University is a rematch of the 2010 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal. The Captains suffered a tough loss 3-2. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all of the action for tomorrow's Regional Final.
