Captains Drop Greensboro, 3-0; Will Host USA South Semifinals and Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport earned the right to host the USA South Semifinal and Championship rounds tonight, when the top-seeded Captains (31-4) dispatched eighth-seeded Greensboro College, 3-0. The Pride ends the season at 11-24 overall.

CNU won in the USA South Quarterfinals in quick fashion, wrapping up the three-set victory in less than one hour. The Captains pulled away with set victories at 25-10, 25-15 and 25-8.

The Captains defense held the Pride to a negative hitting percentage (-.129), committing 24 errors with just 13 kills.

CNU and Greensboro played even in the first set until the score ran to 11-8. The Captains then went on a tear with a 14-2 run to end the first set. The run continued into the second, when CNU had a 16-8 lead and went on to win the set by 10 points.

The Captains finished out the match with an impressive third set, scoring 21 points before Greensboro could reach eight, and then going on to close out the set with four straight. CNU didn't commit an attack error in the third, hitting .478 as a team with 11 kills on 23 attempts.

The team was led by Bailey Jensen, posting a team-high nine kills while hitting .615 for the night. She added a pair of digs, two aces and four blocks. Christie Fellows added eight kills without an error and rookie Jessie Kolden had seven kills for the Captains.

Senior setter Jessie Heavenrich had 28 assists and eight digs while CNU spread around 39 digs between nine players, led by Abby Hogge's nine in the match.

Greensboro had three kills each from Liz Widenhouse, Katie Sylvia and Heather Taylor, while Danielle Simpson led the team in digs with 12.

CNU will host the USA South Tournament Semifinal and Championship round this weekend at the Freeman Center, with game times set for 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm Friday night, followed by a 1:00 pm Championship game on Saturday. Sixth-seeded Shenandoah upset #3 Methodist, 3-1, while #2 Averett and #4 N.C. Wesleyan will join the Captains in Newport News on Friday. CNU will take on the Bishops (20-10) in the 7:30 pm contest.
