NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University Captains finish the CNU Invitational with two more wins beating Mary Washington 3-0 and Salisbury 3-2. For her performance over the weekend, junior
Bailey Jensen was selected as the tournament's most valuable player.
Set scores for the first match against Mary Washington were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-11.
Junior
Cory Harris led the Captains with 11 kills and added 15 digs, two assists and a service ace. Jensen totaled nine kills and led the Captains with three blocks. Splitting time setting for the Captains was junior
Alyssa Kidd with 16 assists and freshman
Brooke Moore with 14. Junior
Abby Hogge had 20 digs for CNU.
The Captains had a.270 hitting percentage and held the Eagles to a .077
The second match of the day was only the Captains' third five-set match of the season. Salisbury came out strong after suffering a 3-1 loss to Juniata earlier in the day and took the first set from the Captains 25-23.
But CNU responded with a 25-16 win and then dropped the third set 25-21 giving Salisbury the 2-1 advantage. The Captains fought back winning the fourth set 25-23 pushing the match to a fifth set.
The Captains won the first point of the set with a kill from sophomore
Chastity Lacy. The Captains and Sea Gulls traded the next few points until the Captains won four consecutive points to take a 7-3 lead. The Captains maintained control of the match and two service aces by Kidd put them up 13-6. Two attacking errors on the Sea Gulls sealed the victory for the Captains, 15-6.
Jensen led the Captains with 14 kills and had another great night at the net with 8 blocks. Also in double digits for kills was Harris who also added two blocks. Kidd led the Captains with 27 assists and compiled 18 digs. Hogge led the team with 19 digs.
The Captains improved to 21-3 with the two wins today and return to action on Tuesday, October 11, to host Mary Baldwin in a doubleheader.
