DANVILLE, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team won their 97th and 98th consecutive conference match with 3-0 wins over Averett and Ferrum. The wins clinched the USA South regular season championship which the Captains have taken for the last four years.

The Captains met Averett first today and won 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19. CNU had a team hitting percentage of .202 with 11 team blocks and held Averett to .033 with only two team blocks.

Freshman Jessie Kolden led the team with 12 kills followed by juniors Bailey Jensen and Cory Harris with seven apiece. Senior setter Jessie Heavenrich picked up 31 assists and added a service ace and three blocks. Junior defensive specialist led with 21 digs. Senior Chelsea McClure had a career-high seven block assists in the match.

Up next for the Captains was Ferrum who they beat in three straight sets 25-12, 25-8 and 25-10. CNU improved their hitting percentage from the first match of the day to .559 against Ferrum. They held the Panthers to a -.062.

Harris led the Captains with 11 kills and was followed by Kolden with eight. Heavenrich had 18 assists in the match and only played two sets. Hogge led in digs with seven. Jensen, junior Christie Fellows, and freshman Terran Bargeron each had two blocks for the Captains.

The Captains improved to 18-0 in conference play and 30-4 overall. Averett ended the day 15-3 in conference action to take second place while Ferrum ended 0-18 to finish last.

The USA South Tournament begins this week and CNU will be hosting two matches on Tuesday, November 1. No. 8 Greensboro will face No. 9 Mary Baldwin at 5:00pm in the Freeman Center and the winner will advance to the second round to meet the Captains at 7:00pm.
