VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Christopher Newport University senior volleyball player
Chelsea McClure led the team in a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan with 12 kills and 14 digs. The Captains' win tonight was their tenth versus Virginia Wesleyan in program history without ever suffering a loss to the Marlins.
The Marlins got out to a 5-1 lead on the Captains but CNU was able to even the score at 7-7 and take the lead with a kill by junior
Cory Harris. Points went back and forth for the rest of the set with the score tying for the ninth time at 20 points apiece. The Captains were able to take the set 25-21 after kills by junior
Kara Elder and freshman
Jessie Kolden.
The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win of the second set. Elder led the set with four kills and added three digs. McClure led the set with six digs while junior
Alyssa Kidd picked up four.
The third set went back and forth until, with the score tied at 13-13, the Marlins scored four straight points to take a 17-13 lead. They maintained the lead for the rest of the set and won it 25-18.
The Captains won the match with a 25-20 fourth set. Junior
Bailey Jensen came up big for the Captains with five kills, two digs, and a block. McClure and Harris each picked up three kills in the set while senior
Jessie Heavenrich led with four digs.
The Marlins were led by Kala Guy with 13 kills, Allie Bal with 18 assists and Erin Paton with 21 digs.
The Captains improved to 28-4 with the win and the Marlins dropped to 12-15. They travel to Danville, Va. to take on Averett and Ferrum on Saturday for their last regular season matches of the year.
