Captains Sail by Meredith and Peace 3-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Captains won two more USA South matches today in a tri-match hosted at the Freeman Center. CNU played Meredith first and won in three straight sets. Up next for the Captains was Peace College where the Captains also won 3-0. The wins improve the Captains to 27-4 overall and 16-0 in conference action.

The Captains won the first match against Meredith with set scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15. Juniors Cory Harris and Bailey Jensen had eight kills for the Captains. Jensen led with a .545 hitting percentage. Junior Alyssa Kidd and senior Jessie Heavenrich split time setting for the Captains with Kidd getting 20 assists and Heavenrich getting 14.

Senior Chelsea McClure had three service aces and also added seven kills. Junior Abby Hogge had 15 digs for the Captains and four different players each earned a block.

The Captains had a team hitting percentage of .333 and held Meredith to .000.

Meredith was led by Molly Markley with eight kills and Kara Baughman with nine assists, two service aces, and 15 digs.

After Peace beat Ferrum in three straight sets they met CNU who beat them 3-0. Set scores for the match were 25-18, 25-13, and 25-13.

Freshman Jessie Kolden led the match for the Captains with 10 kills. Heavenrich picked up 17 assists while Alyssa Kidd had 15. McClure picked up two more service aces giving her five on the day. Hogge had 16 digs while junior Kara Elder earned 12. Jensen and McClure both stood out defensively with two blocks apiece.

Tonight was CNU's last regular season home match of the year. Seniors McClure and Heavenrich were recognized for their contributions to the volleyball program at CNU both on and off the court. They are currently 70-0 in conference play and have won three regular season USA South Championships along with three conference Tournament Championships.

The team has an overall win percentage of 86% and has only lost 21 matches since their freshman year. The two seniors have also made two trips to the NCAA Elite Eight. Also recognized for her contribution to the team was senior manager Margaret Jett.

The Captains hit the road this week and take on Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday October 26 at 7:00pm and then travel to Danville, Va. on Saturday for their last two regular season matches against Averett University and Ferrum College.
