NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball squad beat Washington & Lee 3-0 today just days after the NCAA released the regional rankings placing the Generals third and the Captains fifth. Junior
Bailey Jensen led the match with 15 kills.
All three sets between the Captains and Generals were close with scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20.
The Captains jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set but just a few points later the Generals had tied it up at 5-5. After going back and forth for the rest of the match, with the score tying 15 times, CNU called a timeout at 23-23. Junior
Christie Fellows came through with a kill to give the Captains the lead and Jensen finished off the set with a kill giving the Captains the 1-0 lead.
The Captains took the second set 25-22 with five Captains getting two kills apiece. Freshman
Jessie Kolden picked up two blocks with Jensen getting one. The Captains also had three aces from the service line with seniors
Chelsea McClure and
Jessie Heavenrich getting two and one respectively.
The Captains got out to a 10-5 lead in the third set and maintained at least a three point lead for the rest of the set before winning 25-20. Jensen had six kills in the set while McClure picked up four.
Junior
Alyssa Kidd dished out 25 assists in the match and junior
Abby Hogge led with 13 digs. Kolden, Fellows and sophomore
Chastity Lacy each got up for two blocks to lead the Captains defensively.
The win improves the Captains to 25-4 and drops the Generals to 25-3.
CNU returns to action tomorrow as they host a USA South Tri-Match. CNU will take on Meredith at noon followed by a 2:00pm match between Meredith and Ferrum. At 4:00pm the Panthers of Ferrum take on Peace College followed by CNU's last regular season home match where they face the Pacers of Peace.
