NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 8 Captains suffered a tough 3-2 loss to #5 Eastern University in the Freeman Center tonight. After a comeback victory in the fourth set to tie the match the Captains dropped the fifth 15-7 for an Eagles victory.
The Eagles got out to an 8-2 lead over the Captains in the first set. But CNU kept chipping away at their lead and tied the match up at 18 apiece and took the lead for the first time in the set at 21-20. With the score tied at 23-23 the Eagles dished out two kills to take the first set.
The Captains fell behind in the second set 5-1 but were able to put up five points in a row to take the lead 9-6. The Captains held on to the lead and extended it to five points at 19-14. After an Eastern timeout the Captains scored six straight points with three kills from junior
Chelsea McClure to take the set 25-15.
The third set was tight the entire time with points going back and forth. But the Eagles were eventually able to pull away and won the set 25-19.
With the match on the line the Captains had to take the fourth set and they did just that. But not before having to work their way out of a five point deficit at 15-20. The Captains won three straight points with a kill and service ace from junior
Bailey Jensen and a kill from junior
Cory Harris making it 18-20. The Captains continued to shorten the Eagles' lead and tied the score at 22-22. A kill from junior
Christie Fellows gave the Captains the lead but the Eagles turned around and tied it up at 23 apiece. But two kills by Fellows gave the Captains the victory and tied the match at two sets each.
The fifth set started out well for the Captains who jumped out to a 2-0 lead but nine straight points for the Eagles gave them the 9-2 lead. The Captains fought back but were unable to close the lead and lost the fifth set 7-15.
Jensen led the Captains in three categories with 16 kills, four service aces and six blocks. Junior
Alyssa Kidd tied her career-high with 43 assists in the match. Junior
Abby Hogge had 25 digs and Fellows added 13 kills and five blocks.
The Captains are now 23-4 and Eastern is 22-1. CNU travel to North Carolina Wesleyan next Thursday, October 20 for a 6:30pm match.
