NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The sixth ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University women's basketball team hits the road Saturday for USA South action against Mary Baldwin College (2-8, 0-4) at 2:00 pm. CNU is 10-1 so far this season, including a perfect 4-0 mark in league play, and has won four straight against the Fighting Squirrels.
The Captains defense has been impressive recently, holding opponents in three straight games to a sub-.300 shooting percentage. Last time out, CNU held Shenandoah to just nine first half points on 9.1% shooting (3-for-33), marking the third time this season the Captains have held an opponent to 10 or fewer points in a half.
Offensively, Christopher Newport has been led by senior All-American
Chelsie Schweers, averaging 25.1 point per game. Senior
Barbara Davis is leading the team on the boards, with 9.2 rebounds per game, while also being the defensive leader with 15 blocks and 21 steals.
Mary Baldwin has struggled early this season, winning just two of their first ten games. The Squirrels have been led by senior guard Denise Johnson, scoring 15 points and hauling in 7.7 rebounds per game. Sabrina Desper is second in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 9.5 and 7.5 respectively.
