GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team faces a tough test today, as they will square off against undefeated Greensboro College (15-0, 9-0) at 2:00 pm. The fifth-ranked Captains (15-1, 9-0) and 21st ranked Pride are facing eachother for the first time this season, with both teams undefeated in league play.
CNU has posted 27 straight regular season wins against USA South competition, dating back to the 2008-09 finale when it was Greensboro who stymied the Captains before the USA South Tournament. The Captains will also be looking for their 10th straight win today.
Greensboro, though, is having an equally impressive season. The Pride are undefeated through 15 games and have a talented group on the floor. Danielle Duncan returns after taking a year off and has been named Conference Player of the Week three times this season; she currently ranks in the nation's Top 10 in scoring, at over 22 points per game. Newcomer Chevena Pickard has won six Rookie of the Week honors already this season and has made an immediate impact on the Pride, while 2010 All-Region Nikki Wilborn returns for the Pride as well.
The Captains will counter with a stellar shooting attack, led by senior guard
Chelsie Schweers. Schweers is leading the nation in shooting percentage and scoring, pacing a team that ranks in the Top 5 nationally in shooting. CNU has been putting up impressive defensive numbers lately, including holding six of their last seven opponents to under 30% shooting.
The game will be live video and audio webcast through Captains Sports Live at www.CNUsports.com as fans can catch every minute of the Top 25 Battle online today. Tip is set for 2:00 pm at Hanes Gymnasium.
