NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center will play host to a pair of huge USA South basketball games on Saturday, as Ferrum College comes to town for league action. The fourth-ranked women's team will face Ferrum, who stretched CNU to overtime on the home court last season, at 2:00 pm, followed immediately by the men's team at 4:00 pm, taking on the 22nd ranked Panthers.
Both games will be presented live in an audio and video webcast on Captains Sports Live at www.CNUsports.com. The men's game will also be available at 99.1 FM on the CNU/Pepsi Radio network.
Head coach Carolyn Hunter's squad has raced out to a 12-1 start, including a perfect 6-0 start in league play. Senior guard
Chelsie Schweers is leading the nation with 24.6 points per game and newcomer
Tiffany Davis has been an exciting addition, adding 16 points per game in her first two contests with the Captains.
Ferrum was selected second in the preseason coaches poll and had a 10-game winning streak snapped when they were narrowly edged out by #19 Greensboro in their last game. The Panthers are getting double-figure scoring from four players, led by Kristen Keith with 13.2 points per game, who also leads the team on the boards with 7.5 per game. The Panthers were leading in the Freeman Center last year before Schweers knocked down a huge buzzer-beating three-pointer to force overtime, where the Captains outlasted the Panthers, 86-80. CNU has won five straight in the series.
On the men's side, the Captains suffered a setback on the road at North Carolina Wesleyan and will be looking for a bounceback victory. The Captains are 8-5 overall, with a 1-1 mark in USA South action.
Conley Taylor ranks eighth in the nation in scoring at 23.3 points per game and senior
Mike Green is coming off a career night on the floor in Rocky Mount, where he scored 33 points and added 13 rebounds.
The Panthers rank 22nd in the nation according to D3Hoops.com and are led by Derek Mitchell up front. Mitchell has done well in the Freeman Center, averaging 20 rebounds and over 17 points per game in three regular season appearances. The senior is leading the way for Ferrum this year, averaging 19.4 points and 13.4 rebounds per game. The team is 14-1 overall, including a 3-0 start to USA South action, with their lone loss coming to nationally ranked Eastern Mennonite.
Live stats will be available for both games, along with a live video webcast. For up-to-date statistics, information, rosters and more, check out the GAME NOTES.
