NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU men's and women's basketball teams will travel together for USA South action on Wednesday, as the Captains will face North Carolina Wesleyan. The 4th ranked women's basketball team will tip off against the Battling Bishops at 5:30, followed by the men's team at 7:30 pm.
Both games will be presented live in an audio and video webcast on Captains Sports Live at www.CNUsports.com. The men's game will also be available at 99.1 FM on the CNU/Pepsi Radio network.
Head coach Carolyn Hunter's squad has raced out to an 11-1 start, including a perfect 5-0 start in league play. Senior guard
Chelsie Schweers is leading the nation with 24.1 points per game, while classmates
Jessica Moore and
Barbara Davis have helped lead the way for CNU.
On the men's side, coach
John Krikorian has his squad on a small run, winning four of their last five games, including the USA South opener against Shenandoah last week. The Captains are 8-4 overall, led by junior guard
Conley Taylor, who ranks eighth in the nation in scoring at 23.3 points per game. Rookie
Tra Benefield is having a terrific first year, earning USA South Rookie of the Week honors for the seventh time this week. Benefield is averaging 16.6 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game.
The Bishops are 2-7 on the women's side, led by Samantha Urquhart (11.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg). The men's team is 9-5 overall, with three starters averaging double figures. Domarius Thomas (15.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Matt Dougherty (14.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and Alex Murray (12.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg) lead the way for North Carolina Wesleyan.
