Volleyball Rolls Past Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall

CNU Volleyball beats Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall 3-0 in the Juniata College Asics Invitational

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team added two wins to their record today as they beat Dickson 3-0 and Franklin & Marshall 3-0 in the Juniata College Asics Invitational. The matches improved the Captains to 3-1 for the season.

Against Dickinson the Captains won three sets 25-20, 25-11 and 26-24. Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) led the Captains in kills with seven and was followed by Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) and Alyssa Kidd (Lynchburg, Va.), each with six. Kidd had a team-high in assists with 19 while Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Ca.) had 13. Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) had 14 digs for the Captains. Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) had four of the Captains' nine aces during the match. The loss drops Dickinson to 0-2 on the year.

After three sets against Dickinson, the Captains took the court to face Franklin & Marshall. The Captains limited Franklin & Marshall to less than 20 points in each set with scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-19. Cory Harris led the Captains with nine kills followed by Elder with seven. Heavenrich had 24 of the Captains' 30 assists in the match. Hogge had 20 digs followed by Heavenrich with 12 and Elder with 11. The loss drops Franklin & Marshall to 1-2 on the season.

At the close of the Asics Invitational an all-tournament team was chosen that featured two Captains, Jessie Heavenrich and Caitlyn Jansen. They were accompanied by Nicole Morano (F&M), Kaylee Britain (DC), Libby Morrison (JUN), Kelsey Fuller (JUN) and tournament MVP Steph Strauss from Juniata.

The Captains return to action in the Trinity Fall Classic in San Antonio, Texas next Friday and Saturday, September 10-11. They are set to play The University of Puget Sound on Friday at 1:00pm and #12 Trinity University at 7:30pm. They will take on Pacific University and #16 Southwestern University at 11:00am and 3:45pm on Saturday.
