HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Christopher Newport University volleyball suffered their first loss of the season to second-ranked Juniata, 3-1. The win starts Juniata's season at 1-0 while the loss drops CNU to 1-1 on the year.
The Eagles jumped out on top in the first set 2-0 and maintained the lead winning 25-14.
The Captains battled back in the second set with the score going back and forth and the lead changing four times. The Captains took the lead when it was 11-10 and held on to win 25-21. Senior
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) had five kills, two blocks and one assist in the set while junior
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Ca.) had two kills, one block, and seven assists.
The Eagles came out on top in the third set 25-20 with five blocks and 11 kills. Sophomore
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) had an ace for the Captains and three kills. Heavenrich added eight more assists and a kill. The fourth set was taken by the Eagles 25-15 where they added another four block and 11 kills.
Jansen led the Captains in kills with 12 while Heavenrich tallied 27 assists and six kills. Sophomore
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) had 12 digs followed by sophomore
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) with nine.
The Captains return to action tomorrow with matches at 1:00pm and 3:00pm against Dickinson College and Franklin and Marshall.
