NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The #6 Captains defeated the Shenandoah Hornets in both games of the doubleheader played in the Freeman Center tonight. The wins give CNU a 16-1 record overall and 8-0 record in the USA South. The losses drop the Hornets to 8-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Set scores for the matches tonight were 25-9, 25-16 and 25-14 in the first match and 25-13, 25-21 and 25-11 in the second.
The attacking by the Captains was split mostly between
Christie Fellows (Vienna, Va.),
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.),
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) and
Nellie Gaca (Virginia Beach, Va.) who each had six kills in the first match tonight.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) dished out 24 assists and had a team-high four service aces.
Chastity Lacy (Crozet, Va.) got up for the Captains with three blocks in the match.
Shenandoah was led by
Rachel Maki with nine kills and three blocks in the match.
Kelcy Brown had eight assists for the Hornets.
Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) and Elder took the lead in the second match each earning six kills. The Captains totaled 13 service aces.
Chelsea McClure (Montclair, Va.) led the way with four while
Alyssa Kidd (Lynchburg, Va.),
Mary Horner (Springfield, Va.) and Harris each had two. Bailey put up three blocks for the Captains who had a total of five.
The Captains travel to Ferrum, Va. on Friday, October 1, to take on Methodist and Greensboro. The first match is set to begin at 3:30pm.
