NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport (8-0-0) escaped an early scare from Averett University (6-4-0) and posted their fifth shutout of the season as they blanked the Cougars, 2-0. Defender Sean Moriarty (Yorktown, Va.) had the gamewinner in the 19th minute and junior Winston Mattheison (Norfolk, Va.) added his third goal of the season late in the second half.

Early in the first half, Averett looked to get on the board first, but their goal scored in the 16th minute of play was called back due to an offsides player. Just minutes later, it would be the Captains that lit up the scoreboard. CNU would have it's throw-in knocked away, but midfielder Danny Franklin (Williamsburg, Va.) collected the clear and put it into the middle of the field, where Moriarty was first to the ball. Catching it on a bounce, Moriarty sent a low laser into the right side of the goal for the score.

The two teams battled the rest of the way in a one-goal contest, with each having prime scoring opportunities. The best chance for the Captains came early in the second half, as the Averett goalkeeper, Nate Barker, was beat to the ball by Franklin. He touched inside to Steven Farmer (Poquoson, Va.) and the CNU forward was left wide open in the middle of the field. Averett defender, Kyle Barrow, was planted in the middle of the goal box though, and Farmer's hard shot would be headed away for a team save.

With Averett trying to get everyone forward late in the game, it opened up a chance late for the Captains to get an insurance goal. Senior Clif Kipper (Hayes, Va.) cleared the ball up the middle of the field, where Mattheison headed the ball over his defender and had him beat to the left side. He outside-footed it past the diving keeper into the right pocket.

Barker was solid in goal for the Cougars, making four saves in the game. Averett was led by both Richard Bjornander and John Thrower with a pair of shots each, including one on-frame.

CNU had 19 shots in the game, with Matheison leading the way with five total. Junior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) had a season-high four saves in the clean sheet, his fourth solo shutout of the season.

The #2 Captains return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College for a 7 pm kick-off.
