NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University volleyball won their tenth match in a row defeating Greensboro in three sets. The last then matches have been won with a score of 3-0 giving the Captains 30 straight set victories.The win lifts CNU to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play and drops Greensboro to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
The Captains were up by as much as eight in the first set but the Pride was able to cut the lead to five with a score of 19-14. The Captains took off from there only allowing Greensboro one more point in the set, winning 25-15.
CNU held Greensboro to only 13 points in the second set.
Christie Fellows (Vienna, Va.) had four kills in the set and
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) and
Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) each had three.
Brittany Hunsucker led the Pride with four kills in the set.
Greensboro got up 7-3 over the Captains in the third set but the Captains came back with three straight points off a kill from
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.), another from Elder and a service ace from
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) pulling to within one point. The Captains took the lead at 9-8 and kept on scoring to win the third and final set 25-15.
Elder led the Captains with nine kills followed by Fellows and Jansen with eight apiece. Heavenrich had 36 sets for the match.
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) led in digs with 12. Elder and Jensen both had 3 blocks.
Leading the Pride in kills was Hunsucker with seven.
Dana Sandknop had 19 assists while
Danielle Simpson had 19 digs.
The Captains travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. on Wednesday, September 22, to take on North Carolina Wesleyan with a start time of 6:30pm.
