NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball teams takes on four USA South opponents this weekend. They travel to Raleigh, N.C. to play Meredith and Peace on Saturday and then come back to the Freeman Center to host Methodist and Greensboro on Sunday.
Meredith is currently 5-3 on the season and has played one USA South match against N.C. Wesleyan where they lost 1-3. Freshman
Leanne Burton (Camden, N.C.) is leading in kills with 78, averaging 2.6 per set, and in assists with 120, averaging 4.00 each set. Junior
MaryBeth Finegan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) is leading the Avenging Angels in digs with 116 on the year, averaging 3.87 per set. Freshman
Molly Markley (Mooresville, N.C.) is leading in blocks with 13, five of which were solo blocks.
The Captains lead the series with Meredith 15-1 with Meredith's only victory coming in 1991.
Peace is 2-4 for the year with one of their wins coming against fellow USA South team Averett. The Pacers are being led by freshman
Taylor Johnson (Goldsboro, N.C.) in kills with 56, averaging 2.55 per set. Sophomore
Olivia Griffin (High Point, N.C.) has 162 of the team's 178 assists on the year. Freshman
Melissa Cubillos (Holly Springs, N.C.) has a team-high 78 digs, averaging 3.55 per set.
The Captains and Pacers have met 17 times with the Captains winning each time.
On Sunday the Captains will take on Methodist University at 11:00 am and Greensboro College at 5:00 pm. Methodist is 4-4 with a conference loss to Greensboro. Leading the Monarchs in kills is sophomore
Hillary McPhatter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) with 69 followed by junior
Jalesty Washington (Dunn, N.C.) with 65. Junior
Kayci Miller (Zanesville, Ohio) is averaging 7.78 assists per set with a total of 210 on the year.
CNU is on a 28-game win streak against the Monarchs and lead the series 40-29.
Greensboro comes into the weekend with an 8-3 season record and a 1-0 conference record with a win against Peace College. The Pride has three players with over 100 kills and leading the pack is senior
Sha McDuffie (Winston-Salem, N.C.) with 154. Freshman
Dana Sandknop (Summerfield, N.C.) has an impressive 373 assists averaging 10.08 per set. Freshman
Danielle Simpson (Mayodan, N.C.) has 215 digs averaging 5.81 per set.
The Pride leads the series 44-25 but their last victory came in 2005.
The Captains are currently 7-1 and are led by sophomore
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) in kills with 67, averaging 2.79 per set. Junior
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) is leading in assists with 244 averaging 10.61 per set. Sophomore
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) is averaging 4.48 digs per set and has 112 on the year.
Ferrum College is traveling to the Freeman Center on Sunday to take on both Methodist (1:00pm) and Greensboro (3:00pm).
