Baseball Completes Four-Game Weekend Sweep With Wins Over Rowan and Bridgewater

  NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -  The CNU baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep by topping Rowan,  15-2, and Bridgewater, 4-3, in action at Captains Park Sunday.

  In the opener against Rowan, the Captains scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam home run by Matt Shoemaker.

  Luke Saunders pounded out four hits for CNU, including three doubles and two RBIs. Connor Madden also had four hits, with a double and an RBI, while Drue Vernon had a pair of hits and two stolen bases and Parker Neal had a single and a double with an RBI.

  Ian Lenda got the victory, going seven innings, allowing six hits and just one run.

  In game two Saunders delivered a single to right center to drive in Drue Vernon who had singled and was sacrificed to second, with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Bridgewater, 4-3.

  The Eagles had tied the game with two out in the ninth on a passed ball.

  CNU scored single runs in the third and fourth, but Bridgewater tied it with two unearned runs in the fifth.

  Saunders had two more hits to finish the day 6-9. Steven Keener also had two hits.

  Josh Brinkman went the distance, allowing three unearned runs and five hits while striking out nine.

  The Captains host Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday at 2 p.m.
