Second Half Surge Lifts CNU Over Frostburg State in Holiday Inn Captains Shootout, 71-68

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU Captains (6-4) advanced to the 2010 Holiday Inn Captains Shootout with a today, with a 71-68 win over Frostburg State University (6-6). Christopher Newport was forced to overcome a tough shooting night from the field in the first half and came out of halftime on fire to get past the Bobcats on Wednesday night.

CNU shot just 21.4% from the field in the first half (6-28) shooting, but were solid from the free-throw line and leaned on senior Mike Green to keep the FSU lead to just six at halftime, 30-24. Green had 11 points in the first on 4-of-7 shooting, while adding a perfect 3-for-3 mark from the charity stripe.

In the second half, the Captains raced out to its first lead of the game with a 14-6 run to pull ahead 40-36 on a Brian Herrmann three-pointer with 15:06 remaining. The run would continue, as CNU jumped out to a 13-point lead, the largest of the game, with 7:31 remaining on a Tra Benefield three followed up by a free-throw.

CNU was able to maintain the double-digit lead for five minutes, but Frostburg State would not be turned away easily as they started to mount a comeback. Forcing CNU turnovers and converting on the offensive end, the Bobcats managed to get the lead down to just three points, 68-65, after a pair of maid free-throws by Mhabhushah Koffa with 23 seconds remaining.

Junior guard and CNU's leading scorer, Conley Taylor, would step up and knock down his two free-throws on the other end to give the Captains a five-point lead, followed up by the same from rookie Tyren Johns.

The second half saw CNU turn around the poor shooting first, as they knocked down 57.1% (16-28) in the second stanza. For the game, the Captains shot 39.3% on 22-of-56 shooting, including a 4-for-11 night from three-point land. Frostburg State struggled from the field in the second half and finished just 31% from the field in the game on 18-of-58 shooting.

CNU was led by Taylor, with 22 points and nine rebounds. Green had 15 points for CNU with five rebounds, while Paul Meredith added 11 points and seven assists.

FSU was led by Brian Anderson, with 14 points, while Troy Dockett and Maurice Williams also had double figures for the Bobcats.

CNU will advance to play Wesley College in the 7:30 pm Championship Game tomorrow night. That game will be preceded by the Bridgewater State vs. Frostburg State Consolation Game at 5:30 pm.
