NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach
John Krikorian and the CNU men's basketball team will be back in action today and tomorrow as a part of the Holiday Inn Captains Shootout. CNU will play Frostburg State at 7:30 tonight, preceded by Wesley College and Bridgewater State at 5:30.
On Thursday, the consolation game will be at 5:30, followed by the championship game between the two game-winners at 7:30 pm.
CNU has started 5-4 this season, led by junior
Conley Taylor. Taylor is averaging 23.7 points per game so far with 5.1 rebounds per contest. Rookie
Tra Benefield leads the team on the glass with 7.1 rebounds while also scoring 16.1 points per game. Newcomer to the team over winter break
Paul Meredith has taken the reigns at point, averaging 7.0 assists and 8.0 points per game.
CNU's opponent on Wednesday night will be extremely familiar for the Captains, as they take on Frostburg State. The Captains and Bobcats just faced eachother last week in each team's final contest before the holiday break. FSU is 6-5 overall this season and the 95-91 win over CNU snapped a four-game losing streak.
The first game on Friday will feature the Wesley College Wolverines (4-4) and the Bridgewater State Bears (4-3). Wesley has four players scoring in double figures so far this season, led by Paul Reynolds with 16.8 points per game. Bridgewater State also has a balanced attack, with five players in double figures led by Judah Jackson with 17.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
