HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The third ranked Christopher Newport Captains (6-0) put their perfect record on the line in the perfect holiday location this weekend, as the CNU women's basketball team travels to Honolulu for the Hoop N Surf Classic to take on top ten foe Thomas More Sunday at 9 a.m. (2:00 pm EST) and then McMurry University on Monday at 4:00 p.m. (9:00 pm EST).
The Captains have started the season 6-0 and are 36-1 dating back through the start of last season. Led by the nation's leading scorer,
Chelsie Schweers (25.0 ppg), and a potent front court tandem of
Jessica Moore and
Barbara Davis, the Captains have played extremely well early. On Sunday, though, CNU will face red-hot and 10th ranked Thomas More (7-0), who is 33-4 dating back to last season.
The Captains defeated Top 15 foe Messiah earlier this season, but Thomas More will be the first team ranked in the top ten the Captains have faced since their only loss last season, coming against Rochester in the NCAA Sweet 16.
Thomas More has been led by All-Region standout Nicole Dickman with 11.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Chelsea Tolliver is leading the way on the scoreboard, with 15.7 points per game. The Saints are a tremendous defensive team, ranking ninth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (30.3) and 11th in scoring defense (47.6).
The Captains will then turn their attention to McMurry University (4-4) on Monday. Anna Berthel leads the way with 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while also adding 2.2 blocks per game. Tip will be at 9:00 pm EST for the Captains against McMurry.
