WINCHESTER, Va. -- The No. 3 Captains of Christopher Newport University (3-0) will open USA South Athletic Conference play today, as they travel to Shenandoah University (2-3) for a 5:30 pm tip. Tonight's game will be the 41st in the all-time series with CNU holding a 34-6 advantage, including seven straight wins.

Shenandoah is led by Sam Akers, with 9.2 points per game, while Sierra Edwards is adding 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. The Hornets are averaging 57.8 points per game and are a stingy defensive team, averaging nearly 10 steals per game.

CNU is off to a hot start and are 33-1 dating back through last season, led by three-time All-American Chelsie Schweers. The CNU senior became the Captains all-time leading scorer in their last game and is averaging 26.3 points per game through the first three games. She's knocked down 12 three's and is also averaging 3.0 rebounds per game. Seniors Barbara Davis and Jessica Moore are holding down the front court, averaging 11.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 9.7 points, 8.7 rebounds respectively.
