VIRGINIA BEACH, VA- The Christopher Newport men's basketball squad suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night, a 79-57 defeat at No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan College. The Marlins, now 5-0, led by 17 at the half, 39-22, and cruised to the 22-point win at the Batten Center.
"They're very good and we knew that coming in," first-year head coach
John Krikorian said after the game. "We just couldn't handle their pressure. I was happy with our effort, we just are a very young team and need to keep working."
The Captains, now 2-1 on the season, were led by junior
Conley Taylor (Newport News, Va.), who scored 17 points. Senior
Mike Green (Norfolk, Va.) added 11 points and six rebounds and freshman
Tra Benefield (Richmond, Va.) finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Marlins out-rebounded the Captains, 43-27, and went on a 21-5 run in the opening half to pull away. CNU led the game briefly in the first half before the run.
CNU will host Bridgewater Friday night at the Freeman Center in the opening round of the CNU Invitational. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
