ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Christopher Newport University Captains will take on Emory University in the Division III Volleyball NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 6:30pm (EST). This is the second straight year the Captains have advanced to the Elite Eight. They won the Newport News Regional Round with a 3-2 victory over Randolph-Macon College.
Emory won the Atlanta Regional Round with a 3-2 win over Cal Lutheran. They are currently 34-2 on the year and are led by Amelia McCall with 444 kills. McCall also leads the Eagles in digs with 376. Breanah Bourque has a team high 42 solo blocks and 85 assisted blocks giving her 127 total blocks.
The Captains are being led by
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, VA) with 347 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. She has also accumulated the most blocks with 104.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, CA) is averaging 10.57 assists per set to lead the Captains.
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) is leading with 47 service aces and 576 digs.
The Eagles and Captains have met nine times in program history and the Captains have yet to come out on top. Their last meeting was last year during the regular season where the Eagles won 3-1.
Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.), Jansen and
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) each had 10 kills in the match in 2009 while Emory was led by Jessica McAlvany with 16.
