NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 6th ranked Christopher Newport University volleyball team extended it's program-high win streak to 22 matches today, with a pair of victories at the 2010 CNU Invitational. The Captains dropped Haverford, 3-0, and escaped with a 3-2 victory over Salisbury University. CNU improves to 23-1 overall this season with a record 22 straight wins.
Christopher Newport went 4-0 at the CNU Invitational, including a huge win over 10th ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday night.
In today's game versus Haverford the Captains won in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) had 10 kills for the Captains followed by
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) with nine. Jansen also led the team in blocks with four.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) had 42 assists, 10 digs and one block.
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) had a team-high 14 digs.
The Captains took on Salisbury in their final match of the CNU Invitational. The Seagulls jumped out to win the first set 25-23 giving the Captains their sixth set loss this season. The Captains bounced back to win the second and third sets 25-16 and 25-14. But the Seagulls evened the score at 2-2 with a 25-20 win of the fourth set but the Captains dominated in the fifth winning 15-7 and sealing their 22nd straight victory.
Jansen had 17 kills in the match while Hogge led in digs with 21. Jansen also put up a team-high eight blocks while
Chelsea McClure (Montclair, Va.) had six.
At the conclusion of the CNU Invitational an all tournament team was selected with CNU's
Jessie Heavenrich being named the tournament MVP.
