NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball squad took on the tenth-ranked Titans of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh tonight in the packed Freeman Center. The Captains came out on top 3-1 and improved to 21-1 while Wisconsin-Oshkosh received their third loss of the year dropping them to 17-3.
Set scores for the match were 25-13, 25-14, 22-25, and 25-19.
The Captains and Titans went back and forth in the first set for the first few points. But with the score 15-8 the Captains took off, scoring six points in a row making it 21-9. That deficit proved too much for the Titans as the Captains held them to just four more points before winning the set 25-13.
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) kept the Captains in the game with eight digs in the set while
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) was putting points on the board with five kills.
The Captains dominated the second set as well coming out on top 25-14.
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) stepped up offensively for the Captains in this set with four kills. Hogge continued her stellar defense with seven digs while
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) added two blocks.
The Titans came back strong in the third set with their backs against the wall. The Titans led the entire match with the Captains pulling to within one several times. Andrea Felton had five kills for the Titans as did
Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) for the Captains. Hogge continued her remarkable night with seven more digs.
The fourth set saw the Captains take the lead at 3-2 never to lose it. The Titans tied the score four times but were never able to take the lead. Jansen had five kills in the set while Elder added another four.
Christie Fellows (Vienna, Va.) had two blocks for the Captains as they won the fourth set 25-19.
Elder led the Captains with 12 kills followed by Jensen with 10.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) had 39 assists and 17 digs. Hogge had a total of 27 digs. CNU put up a total of nine team blocks with Jansen getting five and Fellows and Jensen picking up four.
The Titans were led but
Andrea Felton with 12 kills,
Christina Cahoon with 24 digs and
Larissa Krumplitsch with four blocks.
The match was played in front of a record-setting crowd of over 1200 fans. The largest crowd up to now in the Freeman Center was 930 at CNU's match versus Emory in 2008.
CNU returns to the court tomorrow at 11:00am as they face Haverford College.
