FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore forward
Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown, Va.) scored a goal early in the second half, leading the top-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team to their 11th straight victory, winning 1-0 at #25 University of Mary Washington (7-2-1). The win improves CNU to 11-0-0 this season and was the second road win over a nationally ranked opponent in five days.
The #1 Captains were coming off a win over then-#6 Trinity University and backed it up with another shutout victory over the Eagles on Wednesday. The clean sheet was the seventh in 11 games for CNU, and the sixth solo shutout for junior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.). Wolfe made three saves today, lowering his season goals against average to 0.37.
Bonorden led the way for CNU, offensively, by taking six shots in the game. He hit pay dirt in the 59th minute of action, with an unassisted goal. It was his fourth of the season and just the sixth goal allowed by Mary Washington goalkeeper Alec Constantine this year.
CNU also got a pair of shots each from leading scorer
Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Denny Arinello (Virginia Beach, Va.) with one on-frame. CNU outshot the Eagles 14-12, with a 5-3 lead in shots on-goal.
UMW was led by Robby Davis, putting a pair of shots on-frame for the Eagles. T.L. Tutor also had four shots in the game, with one on-goal. Constantine played the full 90 minutes, making four saves and allowing just one goal.
The Captains will host USA South foe Ferrum College this Saturday in league action. CNU will kick-off against the Panthers at 7 pm on Captains Field as a part of Family Weekend on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
