NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team won two USA South matches today against Ferrum College (3-0) and Averett University (3-1). The Captains improve to 18-0 in conference play putting them in first place in the conference. This is the fourth year the Captains have not lost a match to a USA South Opponent, going 18-0 every year.
Set scores for the first match were 25-10, 25-5 and 25-19.
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Captains with six kills. She added five services aces that tied her career-high set last year in a match versus Shenandoah. Four other Captains added aces to give CNU 13 in the match.
Alyssa Kidd (Lynchburg, Va.) had 26 assists while
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) led the Captains with six digs.
Kayla Trippeer led the Panthers with six kills and eight digs.
Leah Quinones had 11 assists to lead Ferrum.
Set scores for the match versus Averett were 25-16, 25-15, 19-25 and 25-19.
The Captains and Cougars swapped points for the first 24 points of the set. With the score 12-12 the Captains went on a six point streak with three kills by
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) one from
Chelsea McClure (Montclair, Va.) and two service aces by Kidd. The Captains held Averett to only four more points in the set winning 25-16.
With the score 12-12 in the second set the Captains again took off again, this time with eight straight points. The lead proved too much for the Cougars and the Captains continued on to win 25-15.
The Cougars bounced back in the third set and got out to a 15-10 lead over the Captains. After a CNU timeout the Captains scored four straight points to pull within one. Averett promptly called a timeout and followed with three points to extend their lead to 18-14. They were able to hold off a Captain comeback and won the set 25-19. This was just the second set the Captains dropped to a USA South Opponent this season.
The Captains jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and maintained their lead throughout. The Cougars pulled to within five with the score 20-15 but the Captains held on to their lead to win 25-19.
Harris led the Captains in the match with 14 kills while Kidd had 43 assists. Kidd also added a career-high five aces. Jansen had seven blocks for the Captains while
Abby Hogge added 18 digs.
The USA South Tournament will begin on Tuesday November 2 as Ferrum will face Mary Baldwin in the Freeman Center at 5:30. The Captains will take on the winner of that match at 7:00pm.
