NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The sixth-ranked Captains beat Randolph-Macon in three sets in the Freeman Center tonight. The win improves the Captains to 29-2 and drops the Yellow Jackets to 19-6.
Set scores for the match were 25-16, 25-17 and 25-22.
The Captains jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set before the Yellow Jackets called a timeout. The Captains maintained their lead allowing the Yellow-Jackets to only get within three points. CNU continued on to win 25-16.
With the score at 4-4 in the second set the Captains took off with four points in a row with two kills from
Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.) and a kill and an ace from
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.). After a service error by CNU the Captains came back with two more kills from Harris and one from
Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) to give CNU an 11-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets inched back to within three at 20-17 but the Captains fought back and finished the match with five straight points to take it 25-17.
The Captains and Yellow Jackets fought back and forth in the third set with Randolph-Macon staying within two to three points of the Captains' lead. With the score at 13-13 the Yellow Jackets scored two to take their first lead of the set 15-13. Points continued to go back and forth until the Captains finished the Yellow Jackets with a kill by Harris ending the set 25-22.
Harris led the Captains with 13 kills and two service aces. She also added twelve digs. Jensen had 11 kills for CNU while
Alyssa Kidd (Lynchburg, Va.) had 43 assists, two kills and one solo block. Defensively
Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) led with 17 digs while Jansen had two blocks.
The Captains return to action tomorrow night as they host Gallaudet in the Freeman Center at 7:30pm.
