ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team dropped their second match of the season tonight against #6 Eastern University with a score of 3-1. The Captains drop to 25-2 on the year while the Eagles improve to 21-1.
Set scores for the match were 20-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 23-25.
The Captains jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and maintained the lead until the Eagles tied the score at 18-18. The Captains earned one more point before the Eagles scored six straight making it 24-19. The Captains battled for one more point before a kill by Madison Goldbach ended the set.
The second set saw the points go back and forth until Eastern pulled away with four straight points making the score 18-13. The Captains came back to within two points but the Eagles took the set 25-21.
The Captains jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set and maintained the lead throughout.
Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) had the set-winning kill giving the Captains the 25-19 victory.
CNU was down by up to four points in the fourth set before they came back to tie the score at 9-9. The score went back and forth and was tied five more times with the last being at 16-16. The Captains were on the verge of forcing a fifth set with the score 23-19 until the Eagles went on a six-point run to seal the win 25-23.
The Captains were led by Jansen with 13 kills.
Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) had 34 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.
Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) had a team-high 18 digs while
Chastity Lacy (Crozet, Va.) led in blocks with four.
The Captains return to action on October 21 as they host N.C. Wesleyan at 6:30pm.
