ASHLAND, Va. - No. 1 ranked Randolph-Macon grabbed a quick lead and maintained it throughout the game, defeating Christopher Newport, 80-68, Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets took a 6-0 lead and never looked back. RMC built as much as a 14-point lead, 26-12, with 8:24 to go in the first half, and were up, 37-27, at halftime.
The Captains closed to within seven points twice early in the second half, but were unable to keep the Yellow Jackets, now 12-0, from expanding the margin to 20 late in the contest.
CNU had four players in double figures, led by Mark Blasingame with 12. Mike Green, Josh Russell and Brian Hermann each contributed 11. Blasingame added 11 rebounds and three blocks. The Captains hit on just 26 of 67 field goal attempts for a .388 percentage and were 6-20 on three-pointers.
Randolph-Macon shot 54 percent from the floor, was 9-19 on threes and was paced by Jordan Brown with 17 points.
CNU returns to USA South action when it hosts N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday night at 7:30 at the Freeman Center.
