WINCHESTER, VA – The Christopher Newport women's basketball team extended their season opening win streak to 11 games by beating USA South opponent Shenandoah, 64-56 in Shingleton Gymnasium.
In their first game of 2010, CNU raced out to an 18 point halftime lead behind strong efforts from juniors
Jessica Moore and
Chelsie Schweers. The Captains built their lead by shooting 52% from the floor in the first half and scoring 20 points in the paint.
The Hornets came out of halftime and forced a dozen second-half turnovers from the Captains and whittled the lead down to 4 points. CNU never trailed but found themselves at the free throw line late in the game needing to make shots to preserve the victory.
Moore, a junior forward from Fredericksburg, VA, led CNU with 17 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the game. Schweers added 16 points while
Barbara Davis scored in double figures, adding 10 points and 9 rebounds.
CNU has won 11 consecutive games to begin the season and is off to the best start in the program's history. They improve to 11-0 overall, 4-0 in the USA South and return to action on Saturday at conference foe, Mary Baldwin.
