Men's Basketball Falls to York (NY) in OT, 71-61

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A long three-pointer tied the game in the final seconds of regulation, and York (N.Y.) went on to defeat CNU, 71-61, in overtime to win the championship of the Captains Shootout Sunday at the Freeman Center.

Ryan Exum buried a 30-footer with six seconds to go to force overtime, and the Cardinals grabbed a quick lead in the extra period, pulling away at the end.

CNU went on a 9-0 run in the last two minutes of the first half, with Conley Taylor scoring seven of them, to lead at halftime, 39-31.

But the Captains scored only eight points in the first eight minutes of the second half to surrender the lead. 

Mark Blasingame paced CNU with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Tarylor scored 12 and Josh Russell 10. The Cardinals, now 7-5, were paced by Elijah Evelyn with 23 points. Marcel Esonwune had 22 and 17 rebounds, and Exum contributed 16.

Esonwune was named the MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Exum and Evelyn. CNU's Blasingame and Taylor were also on the squad along with Edwin Ortiz, of Eastern Connecticut St. ECSU won the third place game over Westfield St., 72-64.

CNU, now 5-5, begins USA South play when it visits Shenandoah Wednesday at 7:30.
