NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport University women's basketball team erased a halftime deficit against conference foe Greensboro to advance to 17-0 Sunday in the Freeman Center.
Greensboro took a 38-34 halftime lead, largely on the strength of 7-9 three-point shooting and 17 CNU turnovers.
But the Captains righted the ship by committing just five second half turnovers and playing outstanding defense that held the Pride to just 5-26 from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
In the process of building a 53-44 lead, the Captains ran off 11 unanswered points and eventually expanded the margin to 20.
Chelsie Schweers had another huge game, scoring 35 points on 13-23 shooting. She was 9-15 on three-pointers and added eight rebounds.
Barbara Davis contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds, while
Kimmy Hopkins scored 12 points and
Jessica Moore added 11 and eight boards.
The win extended CNU to 17-0 for the year and 10-0 in the USA South. Greensboro is 6-9 and 4-6 in league play.
The Captains host Mary Baldwin Wednesday night at the Freeman Center at 5:30.
