Women's Basketball Tops Methodist, 86-60, on Record-Setting Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 13th-ranked CNU women's basketball team used a 21-0 run in the first half to build a 40-15 lead over Methodist and went on to an 86-60 win, on what turned out to be a record-setting night.

Before a crowd of 1,034, one of the largest ever to see a single women's sporting event in CNU history, the Captains rolled to their 16th straight win, a new record.

It was a huge night also for junior Chelsie Schweers who scored a career-high 40 points and vaulted two spots to become the second leading scorer in Christopher Newport history. Schweers passed Tia Moore, and, with her final basket of the night, jumped one point ahead of Pam Stewart with 1,623 points. Schweers has played just 72 games, Stewart, a former All-American, played 91 in her three years at CNU.

The Captains shot an amazing .738 from the floor (31-42) and were 8-11 on three-pointers. Schweers was 14-18 from the field, 5-8 on threes and added eight steals while producing just the fifth 40-point game in CNU women's basketball history.

CNU made ten consecutive field goals during the 21-0 run and led, 44-26, at halftime after Methodist bounced back from the big CNU run to score 11 straight of their own.

Jessica Moore added 17 points for the Captains, going 7-11, and Lauren Gural scored 13 with 4-4 shooting from the floor.

CNU is now 16-0 and 9-0 in the USA South. Methodist is 9-8 and 5-5.

CNU returns to action at the Freeman Center Sunday afternoon, taking on Greensboro at 2 p.m.
