NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball team played a double-header against the Mustangs of Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon. The Captains dropped Game 1 by a score of 7-5, and played to a 4-4 tie in Game 2.
In Game 1 Stevenson put a run on the board in each of the first two innings, giving them a 2-0 lead. The Captains would break the ice when Michael Romett hit a ball over the left-center field fence making the score 2-1.
CNU would tack on another run in the bottom of the third inning, knotting the score at 2-2. After falling behind 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning, the Captains would post two runs in the bottom of fifth and one more in the sixth to open up a 5-3 lead.
Stevenson would put together a big seventh inning rally, as they plated four runs to jump out to a two-run lead of their own. CNU started a rally of their own in their half of the seventh, getting runners on second and third, but the Captains fell short, unable to knock either run in.
Josh Brinkman started for Christopher Newport and went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs and striking out two. Kevin Moreland came in to work 3 scoreless innings, before being pulled with one out and a runner on in the seventh. Mike Giarrizzi (2-3) came on to get out of the jam, but the Mustangs were able to mount a rally and find a way to take the lead.
The Captains were led offensively by Shannon Mark who went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Knocking in runs for CNU were Trae Bailey, Eric Cole, Steven Lindemuth, and Romett, who each had one run batted in.
In Game 2 the Captains were lead on the mound by Brandon Berry who pitched a great game, going 6 innings and giving up only 3 earned runs on 5 hits. Also contributing on the hill was Kyle Baumann, throwing an inning of scoreless relief.
CNU got on the board early when Bailey hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. The Captains would proceed to tack on another run in each of the next two innings, earning them a 4-3 lead.
The Mustangs would battle back to tie it at 4-4 in the sixth inning. And that's where the score would stay as rain caused the game to be called after the seventh inning.
Stevenson's record moves to 18-26-1 on the year, while the Captains wrap up the regular season at 24-11-2.
