Neal’s Single In The 10th Lifts Baseball Past No. 2 Salisbury, 5-4

SALISBURY, MD – Christopher Newport's Parker Neal singled home the go ahead run in the top of the 10th to give the Captains a 5-4 win over top-seeded and second-ranked Salisbury in a NCAA Regional contest Thursday evening.

The Sea Gulls tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra frame. In the 10th, Ben Lenda singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a Salisbury throwing error. Shannon Mark reached on a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Mike Giarrizzi struck out swinging and Neal followed with a single to right that scored Lenda for the go ahead run.

Kevin Moreland, who picked up his second win of the year, worked around a two-out walk in the 10th to seal the win.

Eric Cole finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a triple. Lenda went 2-for-5, Mark finished 2-for-4, Despins was 2-for-5 and Bailey went 2-for-6.

Ian Lenda started and tossed five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out four. Giarrizzi pitched three innings, giving up no runs and no hits, walking four and struck out three. Moreland pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits, walked one and struck out four.

Salisbury falls to 38-7 while Christopher Newport improves to 26-11-2. The Captains will take on Shenandoah Friday in a winner's bracket game with first pitch set for 4:30 pm.
