Box Score SALISBURY, MD – Christopher Newport's baseball team scored four times in the fifth and complete the come from behind win, 5-3, against Washington & Jefferson on day one of the NCAA Regional Wednesday.
The Captains trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. CNU got its first run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Trae Bailey, his ninth of the year.
After a strikeout to start the inning, Ben Lenda reached on an infield single Shannon Mark Struck out and Mike Giarrizzi walked. Parker Neal singled to center and reached second on the throw, scoring Lenda and advancing Giarrizzi to third. Bailey was intentionally walked and Giarrizzi scored on a balk. With runners on second and third, Chris Despins singled up the middle, scoring Bailey and Neal.
Despins finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Neal, Bailey, Michael Romett, Eric Cole, and Lenda all had one hit for Christopher Newport.
Josh Brinkman tossed seven strong innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, while walking two and striking out eight. He improves to 5-1 on the year. Kevin Moreland pitched the final two innings, yielding two hits and striking out one for his fifth save of the year.
The Presidents fall to 33-13 while the Captains are now 25-11-2. CNU returns to action Thursday when they take on top-seed Salisbury at 4:30 pm.
