Baseball Drops Randolph-Macon, 6-4

ASHLAND, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad won a 6-4 decision at Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets struck first with a single run in the second. In the fourth, CNU knotted the score at 1-1 on Mike Giarrizzi's sacrifice fly that plated Shayne Kersey.

RMC scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. In the sixth, Trae Bailey scored on a double play and Michael Romett, who doubled, scored on Kersey's RBI single to tie the score at 3-all.

In the seventh, Parker Neal and Bailey hit back-to-back doubles, scoring Neal and Chris Despins followed with a two-run home run to put CNU on top, 6-3. Randolph-Macon scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.

Bailey went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Romett finished 3-for-4, Despins was 2-for-5 with the home run and two RBI and Kersey went 2-for-4. Giarrizzi also finished 2-for-4.

Tyler McElhenny tossed six innings, allowed three runs on three hits, walked one and struck out four to improve to 2-1. Kevin Moreland closed it out, throwing three innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out four for his third save.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 11-17 on the year. CNU improves to 17-6-1. Christopher Newport returns to action Thursday when they travel to Gallaudet with first pitch set for 3 pm.
